Hi, Remember me?

Hello.

I have been definitely incommunicado for a long time. Life takes twists and turns that one does not expect. Even if you somewhat expect the new direction, the daily living out of the change can be overwhelming.

We have wandered again…………. And are now back in Canada. We arrived in Calgary September 2, after traveling three quarters of the way around the world.

We are in the process of setting our new direction, probably working here on Canada. We are temporarily in a small furnished apartment in southern Calgary, close to all amenities, including a huge quilt shop.

Getting used to be able to read all the signs and understand the store clerks. Living on the 10th floor………never done that before either.

We loved through three days of unseasonable snow here.

Our air shipment arrived at the door this morning, containing all of our warm clothing…… now the weather has turned nice again. But it also contains my sewing machine, and a few projects. I am really excited about this.

I have found a twice-a-week Tai Chi class to go to, and with it some people to talk to. And our gorgeous granddaughter live here too.

Time will tell just where we will end up, in Calgary, grande Prairie, Estevan, or some where farther afield.

But life is good, I am back, and still have lots of stories to tell of my adventures in far away lands.

Afternoon Swim

At the local regional park on Last Mountain Lake, they have lane swimming after lunch. Today, Brenda and I final made it there.

20140703-145926-53966922.jpg

No photos of us in action, but it was wonderful. I did 32 laps and even some front crawl, which I find really tiring. The water was the perfect temperature for it.

I was so happy, considering that it is a year since I last did anything but play in the water.

We will be leaving tomorrow, do this is a one-time shot. Sure wish I could do this every day!

At The Zombie Race

We spent Fathers Day in Devon, Alberta, just south of Edmonton. And of all thing to to on a fine summer day, we found ourselves at a Zombie Race.

David’s cousin’s wife runs Marriot Fitness in Devon, and she does a lot of fund raising for good causes. This one was for the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton, and wow! Does she ever do things right! This was their third Zombie Race. Lots of good clean (well! pretty muddy) fun and exercise and lots of laughs.

We weren’t quite sure what a Zombie Race was. It is basically a fun race through obstacles, where there are zombies popping out at you and trying to steal ribbons from your belt as you sneak by them. I think if you lost all your ribbons you are officially dead, but here, you just kept on running.

We arrived just a bit before it began, and there were the Zombies….. Some were university students, but lots were just adults and children who showed up in costume to take part.

Tons of gross make up, and some very gruesome mask –

Three zombies did a dance for us. One little girl who had been terrified of the zombies last year dressed up as one this time.

There were lots of the contestants who were also in costumes – here is one t-shirt I particularly liked.

20140627-080052-28852567.jpg

There was a family race, a children’s race, and then an adult race of 4 kilometres, which entailed going down by the river, and running up the bank, as well as climbing up the hill out of the park and sliding down a water slide made of three tarps, and lubricated generously by a hose on a water.

Here are some photos of the race, including crawling through the worm pit, swinging over the water (or not), and the end of the yellow tunnel.

And to top off a fine morning, here is David’s Dad, dancing with a zombie.

A morning of good clean but slimy and muddy fun.

An Interesting Encounter

The day after we arrived from Russia, we were on the road again. This time, we drove from Black Diamond, just south of Calgary, to visit family just south of Edmonton. David’s parent had been looking forward to our arrival, and the chance to visit with friends, as they don’t travel that far on their own any more.

Seems a bit unfair that David had assured everyone that it would be no trouble driving after a 24 hour flight from Russia, covering 7 time zones and the International Date Line. The unfair bit is that I was doing the driving while everyone else napped peacefully.

We stopped for lunch and a visit in Red Deer, and then were on our way. I was unsure of where out hotel was in Leduc, so I opted to stop at Tim Hortons. Amazing how people sleeping in a car will awaken when the rhythm changes. Fortunately, all were in favour of a break and a coffee.

Sitting inside with a good view of the parking lot, we spied a bright orange Harley with a most curious trailer behind. The top was open, and it seemed to have an open roof and a wind shield of sorts. Curiosity got the better of the men, and they went out to have a closer look.

As they approached the bike, the owner appeared, and the mystery was solved.

20140614-071204-25924980.jpg

The owner said that his dog was about eight years old, and they often travelled together like this. They have been to Las Vegas several times. He said that his dog can be very protective of the vehicle, but he seemed very friendly……… Maybe he just knows good people. They have been featured on Facebook, and in a motorcycle magazine as well.

The dog has goggles to wear on the trip, but he wants to get him some aviator shades as well.

20140614-071646-26206868.jpg

I took the photos through the restaurant window, but as they left the parking lot, there were many smiles and many cameras clicking a remember acne of this chance encounter.

On Our way

We are on our way to Canada, in Vladivostok airport. We have collected out luggage, eaten, and have another half hour before we can check in for out flights to Seoul and onward.

I have to admit that there is a bit more airport here than in in Yuzhno. In fairness, however, one has to remember that in Yuzhno, you are either coming in or leaving – there is nowhere to transfer to.

Here, there are souvenir shops, eateries, ( and many more on the way, by the looks of it)

20140612-133137-48697192.jpg

20140612-133159-48719222.jpg

There is even a post office, although it is closed today because of the National holiday. It has some interesting things in the window, howeve, like your favourite children’s movies in Russian.

20140612-133422-48862541.jpg

And some Russian dolls –

20140612-133459-48899072.jpg

You can buy a model ship or airplane –

20140612-133533-48933404.jpg

Or caviar – even the good, black one…….

20140612-133618-48978600.jpg

I have earned that this is the beginning of the range of the Amur tiger…..

Looks like Vladivostok is a happenin’ place.

Missing In Action – Again

Sorry that I haven’t been posting much lately – I have taken tons of photos and seen some really interesting places…….. and just not sat down long enough at the computer to share them with you. The weather the past couple of weeks has been incredible – and I have spent every moment I could out enjoying it.

We are heading home to Canada tomorrow – and I am frantically packing, and cleaning up the house before the pet-sitters arrive. Looks like we are leaving just in time, as today it poured all afternoon, and the forecast is for at least a week of the same.  I’m not sure it will be much different in the Prairies, but we shall see.

I will try to post short notes of our adventures back in Canada – and hope to catch up with the good Yuzhno stuff when we return here mid-July.

Until then…..IMG_7974

BBQ in Yuzhno

Last Saturday, we had a BBQ here in Yuzhno.  David wanted to treat the staff in his department, but when it was delayed by a week due to nasty weather, there were only three available to come.  He invited the support staff and their families. The conversation was a mixture of English and Russian – enough English for us to have a great time as well.

There are several BBQ facilities here.  We picked the one that is part way up the mountain, and very close to the ski hill.  P1090394They have a series of covered picnic areas, and an attached BBQ.  They will even supply the coal and the cook for a small fee, leaving the partiers free to enjoy themselves, and, as David said – free of blame if the steaks are overdone.

I had never been faced with planning a feast for 35 people before, and wasn’t sure where to find everything I needed.  We got steak at the Korean market, pop and beer at the bulk food store, salads and chicken and sausage and cakes at the local supermarkets….. and lots of throw-away plates and cutlery.  When we set forth on Saturday afternoon, the car was full.

It was a glorious day, and everyone had fun.  We bought water pistols for the kids, and they had a blast.  P1090517

There were also balls, a skipping rope and a hula hoop, which sparked competition not only between the children, but the adults as well.

Enough said – here are a few photos of the park facilities, the beautiful forest beside us, and the fun.

Such lovely weather (in spite of the late rain) – so lucky to be outdoors with great people in a beautiful place.  Love you, Sakhalin.

Snapshots of England – London – Day One

During my five wonderful days spent visiting my daughter and her husband just outside of London, we spent two days in the city.  Just enough for a taste without being overwhelmed by how much there is to see and do in London.

After doing some shopping in the nearby town of Beaconsfield, and dashing in for a quick look in the nearest John Davis store, it was time to hit Oxford Street for some real shopping.

On Good Friday, we drove to the train station at Gerrards Cross, and half an hour later, we were emerging into the sunshine at Marylebone Station. We followed Heather’s usual route to work and were soon on Oxford Street. I was looking for clothes… a skirt… dress… shoes………. something nice and semi-dressed up. After years in the Middle East, most of my clothes, other than really casual ones, were either designed for hot weather, or just plain old.P1080526

In and out of shops, in and out of dressing rooms we went – one coral blazer and a top later, it was time to hot foot it to Brown’s Hotel in Mayfair to meet Graham for afternoon tea. Good thing for Google Maps and smart phones, as the streets sure are not all straight.  Lovely weather though.

P1080532

Brown’s Hotel is old – originating in the late 1800’s. and the tea room was really packed on Good Friday, but the service was wonderful. Tea was lovely – tiny finger-sized sandwiches, scones and clotted cream, yummy desserts, and a pot of tea each.  We left feeling quite satisfied, and well prepared for a walk to St. Martin-in-the-Fields, where we had tickets for a choral concert.

We passed |St. James Palace –P1080536

And were soon at Trafalger Square –P1080547

Here is the church beside South Africa House –P1080541

Although the sanctuary is quite light and modern –P1080543

The cafe in the basement gives a better indication of its age.  The current church was constructed in 1724.P1080542

The concert was quite amazing – the acoustics are quite incredible, and we enjoyed it very much, although we were quite happy to have cushions on those hard wooden benches.

After the concert – Charing Cross tube station, and the trip home.P1080551

A Thoroughly English Experience

Palm Sunday – rain and the forecast of more.  And do we stay at home, comfortably curled up with a blanket and a good book?  Of course not.  There are things to be done and places to be seen while I am here in England.

Heather has been riding ever since she had her first job, videoing practices for the local professional football team. She rode in Canada, Dubai and Aberdeen.  This year she has to pursue other sports, as one of her horses is retired, and the other sidelined due to injury. But her love of riding, and especially eventing, is a strong as ever.

And there just happened to be a competition at Henley-on-Thames, home of the famous regatta. And what is a little rain when you can watch horses run and jump?

The rain was fairly heavy when we set out,  P1080628

but was fairly light by the time we arrived.

These competitions are called trials, and are to establish the right to compete in various competitions throughout the season.  There are three separate events – dressage, show jumping, and cross-country.  The latter is  the equivalent of riding with the hounds – only without the hounds, and nary a fox in sight.

We bought some lunch and settled down at a picnic table near a series of jumps…  P1080635

P1080633

After a while, Heather suggested that we walk the course backwards, beginning at the end. This is all very new to me, but apparently, it is quite normal.  So, off we went.

If you don’t like horses, or photos of them, then you may as well go have a cup of tea…. because this is pretty well what this is from here……… with the exception of a huge dog, a couple cute kids, and a rainy picnic with friends.

I have never been on a cross-country course before, so I didn’t realize that they would have a marked walking path beside the course, so you didn’t usually have to worry about a horse and rider suddenly coming upon you.  And it was very enlightening to walk along, and see what crazy obstacles they had to negotiate.  while constructed, they really did resemble the kind of things one would find while galloping across fields and through woods in hot pursuit of a fox.

Just after the last fence, which was really a jump followed by a coffin-shaped pit to jump over, and then another fence, we saw these children, patiently awaiting the next competitor.

P1080640

Farther along the path, there was this lovely open hill, where a loop in the course almost met. At the bottom, you can see a series of jumps with a long water run between.P1080644

P1080648

One of the fences – they are done up very nicely. This one has a high and low side.  They are using the low one as this is the Junior level competition.P1080641

P1080661

Some of the jumps are way lower on the landing side… and like this one, may have another step up or down in quick order……. or a very sharp turn to negotiate.

Imagine going through the bluebell woodsP1080658

to thisP1080653

Another jump – this horse is refusing it – but look at the lovely Great Dane –P1080649

And what about this canine spectator!P1080655

After we got back to the picnic tables, our friends were there – and so was the rain.  Smoked salmon and Cornish ice cream under umbrellas.P1080662

Oh – and for you Royal watchers – while we ate, Zara Phillips, daughter of Princess Anne, rode over the same set of fences that I showed at the very beginning.  This is three months after she gave birth to her daughter. We could tell it was someone important by the pack of photographers under the trees.

Couldn’t mistake this day for anywhere but England.
