An Interesting Day

Today was the day that the packers were supposedly coming…… although I knew that it was impossible.  The directive was coming from Texas on Friday to Poland, where it was already late Friday, to Norway….. where it was too close to the weekend and the end of the month to be able to produce packers out of a hat.  Still, I was up early, trying to sort out the piles and put them in their places, just in case.

When I hadn’t heard anything by 10:30, I headed into Stavanger to see a private showing of “Anna Karenina”.  I have only read half of the book, so I didn’t know the story, although I did at least know who the characters were.  As there seem to be quite a few, I thought that should stand me in good stead.  And I should see a few friends, possibly for the last time.

As I left the parking garage, my phone rang – and it was the moving coordinator.  Would it be OK to begin packing on Wednesday. I tried hard not to jump and shout and dance down the street as I told him it would be just fine.  I’ve been waiting so long for this moment!

To my mind, “Anna Karenina” is a must see. Set in Russia (Moscow and St. Petersburg) in the late 1800’s, it is a larger-than-life kind of story – classic and complicated, depicting Russian aristocracy in the Tzarist period, and timeless personalities and complications.  The staging is most unique – I won’t tell you about it, as that would spoil it.  I though it was perfect.  A wonderful way to spend two hours on a chilly Monday.

When I got back into the open air, I checked my phone, and saw another message from the Moving coordinator….. all systems go. Yes!

On my way home, I stopped for lunch, knowing that the delay would land me in the interminable Stavanger area afternoon  traffic jams.  It was worth it….. every minute of it.  Matsalen in Forus – Fiskesoupe (fish soup, if you hadn’t guessed, but you have to remember to pronounce the e’s or the won’t understand what you want). Photo 2013-02-25 2 41 36 PMThe recipe changes slightly from place to place, but it is always wonderful.  Full of fish and shrimp, blue mussels, course brown bread sliced really thin, and a variety of vegetables, it is so creamy and full of flavour. I’m really going to miss my fiska soupa when I’m gone.

Stuffed, I crawled along the highways back home, and began getting things lined up for Wednesday.  I have two friends coming tomorrow to sew and knit together (why am I just finding people to sit and craft with when I’m about to leave???), so I have to be a bit more organized.

Tonight’s walk with Snoopy was brisk and wonderful.  The moon is large and so round that it must be full.  My old friend, the grey heron, was standing in the duck pond, and it was so still that his reflection was perfect. The moonlight muted the amber light of the street lamps, making the effect particularly lovely. He wasn’t the least bit worried about us walking by, so I got to enjoy the view, although he is beautiful in flight as well.

That’s it for the day – a bit of stew and early to bed.  And I really am going to Russia – I was beginning to wonder if it would ever happen.

The Quilt That Didn’t Want To Be Quilted

I’ve decided that this top just doesn’t want to be quilted…. at least not yet.

This quilt top was the product of the Muscat Quilt Group’s mystery project while was there.  I finished it in time, and was all set to quilt it when the movers came and packed up my machine and frame……. and then we lived among the boxes for four months.DSCN0014

When I got my sewing room set up last year in Norway, I put it up on the design wall.  I would whisper to it – and it would tell me what it needed. Dead silence!

Finally I needed the wall for something else, so took it down to the frame. I would set it up, and stabilize the borders to keep it square……. with this intimate interaction, surely I would discover what it needed, or at least have some ideas.IMG_5637

Took a while, but I finally got it started.  Working with my ruler after a long absence, using a fine thread on a fairly plain background……….   Some good feathers, but some tension problems on the back.2013-02-16 22.30.15 I must have stretched the backing a bit too, as the front was a bit wrinkly. The imperfection of my straight lines was too glaring, so off it came and out came the stitches.Photo 2013-02-10 8 12 52 PM

Darker thread, straighter lines, careful attention to the tension of both backing and quilt top.  Lines much straighter, feathers in the corners, Photo 2013-02-23 8 05 38 PMideas working for stippling on the top….. Photo 2013-02-23 8 05 46 PMI even used the ruler to make an interweaving diamond design in the outer border.  Tension working well……….Photo 2013-02-23 8 04 28 PMwrinkles in the backing!Photo 2013-02-23 8 04 54 PM

Off the frame came this quilt again……. and as the packers should be here very soon now, I dismantled the frame, taking the quilt upstairs to unsew in front of the fireplace.

When I finally get into my new home and have my quilt machine and frame set up again, I will try to talk some sense into this quilt top.  Until then, I guess it is still a mystery.

Mistaken For A Native..

Native Norwegian, that is.

A young Norwegian with red hair spiked up into a point paid me the supreme compliment today.  I ordered my lunch in carefully rehearsed Norwegian, and, when I didn’t understand that he said that coffee was included in the meal, and broke into English, he apologized profusely, saying he really didn’t realize that I wouldn’t understand.

I ordered a small dish of Komla (koh mla), which is traditional Norwegian workers fare…… boiled dumplings (raspeballer) made of grated potato and flour, various meats, salted usually, some sort of hot dog or sausage, yellow turnip, and chopped bacon in melted butter. The precise make up of the dish is dependent upon the region you are in. It’s not diet food, to be sure, but something that fills and sticks to your ribs while you work in the fields or on a fishing boat. It was already 1:30 in the afternoon and I really hadn’t eaten, so it was just what was needed.P1030039

I have had komla before – again on a Thursday as that seems to be komla day, and quite enjoyed it, although I could have done with more turnip and one less dumpling.  today i got more turnip and only one raspeboller.

And the whole time I ate, I chuckled about passing myself off as a Norwegian and succeeding, at least for a minute or two.  In fact, I’m still chuckling, and with all the confusion surrounding this move to Russia, that is a VERY good thing.

I Missed The Rain

Just got in from Snoopy’s and My evening walk.  It is misty and rainy and very calm….. the air is soft.  As I walked along, I realized that I have missed the rain.  We have had sun and cold weather and snow……. but not much rain in a while.

I didn’t think I would miss the rain – but I did!

Lady In Waiting

I’ve just realized that the past year and a half, I’ve become a lady-in-waiting.  Now, that term is sometimes used for someone who is pregnant – well, that’s NOT what I mean!  Just to set things straight here.

I have found the past 18 months of my life very unsettling in many ways.  In September 2011, I was waiting to get packed up and move back to Canada…….. and the packers didn’t arrive until September 27th.  Every day I awoke, wondering if this would be the day when we would find out the plan.  I felt paralyzed by the indecision. Having stacks of things I sincerely want to do, and not getting anything actually done…. or even started.

When almost everything was packed up, the decision to take the job in Norway instead was made.  Due date for arrival – December 1.  And we waited.  And with my air shipment unpacked so we could continue to live there, I could have gotten a lot of sewing done……… but every day I waited for news……… you are beginning to see a pattern here, aren’t you?

The past year in Norway has been similarly fraught with waiting.  And although on the surface I looked like I was doing a lot, and exploring Norway and enjoying my new surroundings (and I was), under the surface, there was still this “waiting” for something to happen…….. finding a house, getting our drivers licenses, and since September, moving to Sakhalin Island in Russia. Running out to check the mail for several months to see if we had received the letter that said we could exchange our drivers licenses…….. waking up at 3:00 am and checking just in case David had sent an email saying that all was clear to pack up and move to join him in Russia.

It’s been a paralysis of the mind, if not of the body.

I’m trying to change that now – checking for the mail late in the afternoon – waiting until morning to check emails, sitting by the fire and reading or knitting instead of playing on the computer where I can keep an eye out for that email. Quilting on my frame downstairs, instead of feeling too unsettled to do more than look at it and come back upstairs.

Living every minute as its own entity and with its own importance isn’t easy. Tackling all the projects I really do want to get finished and haven’t…..can I really do this?

I’ve been practicing waiting for too long. I have too many interests to leave them sitting for much longer, or I really won’t have time to do them in this life.

Now it’s time to let the changes come as they will, and pack as much into every minute until they do.

Feed The Birds

and it’s not tuppence a bag, either.  And you have to bring your own. but it’s still great entertainment, and the ducks do appreciate it.

We live very close to a duck pond – at least the mallards think that it is theirs. They waddle along the shores, play duck derby floating down the stream, and swim around quacking.  Snoopy thinks it is his personal assignment to make sure they are NOT on the shore next to the path, or even hiding along the edge of the water by the bank.  They go waddling off, splashing into the stream, and waggling their tail feathers at him in protest.

One day I took a stale roll (we call them buns in Canada), cut it into chunks, and threw it out over the water as we walked.  It was quite funny the way the ducks poured in from all directions, and followed us along the stream, just in case we had some more.  Hummmmm – that gave me an idea.P1020926

The following day I can armed with half a loaf of bread, and my camera.Tying Snoopy to a light post, i proceeded to throw out a handful of bread crumbs, and then try to snap a photo of the ducks as they flew to where I was P1020714 P1020715and monkey-piled in the water for the food. P1020725 P1020896I walked a bit farther upstream, and did it again. P1020949 P1020938It’s hard to hold a camera steady when you are laughing as hard as I was.

These silly ducks were even coming up on the path, just in case they would have a better chance at close range.  P1020720They weren’t even all that concerned about the dog in their quest for food.

Fast shutter speed, but slow between shots……. that lead me to my second bright idea. somewhere on this camera, there had to be a setting for a burst of shots…..  Finding it, I set out again, a few days later. Snoopy didn’t think it was such a great idea, as he again sat watching the fun from the lamp post.

This worked much better. although I’d love a bit longer between shots.  The ducks were hilarious.  When the bread was almost done, I dropped some on the path, the went to get Snoopy while the ducks came up from the water. P1020992They didn’t even hesitate coming close to him, so intent were they on the remaining chunks of bread.

He took a bit of a lunge – the temptation was just too great – and they got a bit excited, but no one was hurt.P1020996

Flicking through the photos in quick succession on Picasa, it was almost like a video.  Maybe next time, that’s what I’ll do.

Reflections – On My Upside Down World

Another diamond-bright day – another walk along the stream in Sandved Park.  Yes, there are other routes to take – but why?P1020805 P1020808

Something a bit different – shadows in the snow –

P1020809

P1020823 P1020857

At the lake – this swan came over to warn us away from his family.  I didn’t notice his reflection in the water until I looked at the photo –P1020830 As you can see, it was a very calm day, and the stream is quite low, so mostly still –P1020856

P1020855I keep telling myself I’m going to come out one of these days with no dog so I can take two-handed photos and do some adjusting with exposures – but then Snoopy looks at me with those big, sad eyes, and I’m back to one-handed snap shots.

Caught in the Act

Almost every day there has been a gray heron somewhere along the stream near my house ….. and I’ve shown you my sad attempts by iPhone to get a good photo of him.  On Friday, I decided to get serious in my quest, and pocketed my small Lumix in the hopes of spotting the bird and at last getting a good shot. It was a beautiful, sunny day – just right for the hunt.P1020735

When I first came around a bend and saw the bird, out came the camera and he was pretty cooperative.P1020757

Then I went farther – and there was another.  This was the first time I’ve seen more than one, and the first flew off in a different direction.P1020762

Up by the small rapids, this fellow stood on the rock…… P1020737

and wandered provocatively along behind the trees…P1020741

then flew just a few meters upstream, settling again on the bank.  P1020747As we walked closer, he suddenly flopped into the water.  Strange, I thought to myself, they always just fly away……but then he stood up…… with a fish in his beak.P1020750

As I tried to get a bit closer, and wished my camera didn’t take so long between shots, he carefully juggled the wriggling fish so that the head was closest to his beak….P1020752

And then with one swift movement, down his throat it went.P1020753

Wow!  I have never seen that before – and I actually had my camera with me!

The sunlight also highlighted the iridescence of the mallard drakes’ plumage – couldn’t resist this shot.P1020774

As I went farther in the park, I saw a total of 8 birds…… I think some were duplicates, but it must have been a fine day for fishing, as I have never seen more than one before.P1020770

One Frosty Friday

After a perfectly glorious, sunny day last Thursday, and a night so clear that you could almost reach out and touch the stars, we awoke Friday morning to frost covered ground……. at least, that’s what I thought it was.

When Snoopy and I ventured out for out morning walk, we discovered that it had snowed…… but it was the strangest snow I have ever seen.  Tiny balls about the size of the head of a pin ( about 1 mm in diameter) dotted the ground.Photo 2013-02-01 9 40 57 AM

And this is what I saw around my car….Photo 2013-02-01 9 21 38 AM

The snow had apparently bounced off the car as it fell, and left a ring on the ground – a perfect outline of the car.  There was frost on the windows…. but I’ve never seen snow like this before.

As we wandered down the street, we came to our neighbours’ driveway.  they had already left for work, but I could see where they had been parked.  It reminded me of the chalk line they draw around a dead body before they remove it on all the mystery programs on TV.Photo 2013-02-01 9 23 53 AM

The frozen leaves on the rhododendrons rustled like silken dresses Photo 2013-02-01 9 25 09 AM

The frost was a bit thicker down by the stream –Photo 2013-02-01 9 44 08 AM

Although the sun shone all day, it didn’t get quite warm enough to erase those strange rings of snow…… it took Saturday’s snowfall to cover them and make us forget the mystery.

Saturday Morning

Friday it began to warm up (finally the thermometer remembered there were numbers higher than -10 C). When I looked out into the darkness before I went to bed, I could see that there was a layer of new snow on the ground.  That’s the way it works – cold temperatures equal clear skies and no snow – or maybe the clear skies come first.  Warmer weather means clouds and precipitation.  After almost a month of very cold, sunny weather, I was about ready to exchange some sunshine for a bit of warmth.

Saturday morning I awoke to a white world again – not thick frost this time, but snow on the ground. I wondered if I would need to clear the icy snow from the driveway, but decided that I would give nature a chance to do the job, as the forecast was for above freezing temperatures. Not there yet, but -5 C was a darn sight warmer than -16 C.IMG_5678

When Snoopy and I went out for out morning walk, the ground was crunchy, and it wasn’t long before we were peering through a haze of snowflakes. At 9 am it was only beginning to get light outside, and so my photos all have a blue, early morning cast to them.  I hate going out in the dark in the morning – bad enough that it’s dark by 5 pm and our evening walk is necessarily under the lights. Snoopy was glad to be out early, as I’m afraid all too often I sleep in and he sits with his legs crossed at the front door, waiting for me to take him out. We weren’t the first ones out, but traffic is light in the park on Saturday mornings.

There was still ice on the rocks in the little waterfall,IMG_5681

and snow on the duck steps by the stream.IMG_5679

Someone had been out using the exercise equipment in the Trimparken in the cold.IMG_5682

In Western Canada, when I was growing up, bicycles were a mode of transportation and recreation in the summer time.  I can remember as a child how exciting it was to be able to get out my bike in the spring, and head up the gravel road just for the sheer joy of it.  I guess now there are a few hardy souls that use them all year…… but nothing like here. These Norwegians are a tough lot…… just as we arrived at the park a troupe of cyclists surged down the path, warm riding gear and studded tires making this an all-weather sport now.   Farther along, we were over taken by another lot – here you see a shaky iPhone photo of them as they head.IMG_5683

Thank you very much, but I’ll stick to summer cycling.

The duck pond was about half-frozen over, but the ducks and lone cormorant seemed to enjoy having the ice to perch on out of the water.IMG_5689

I’ve been stalking this heron, who seems to always be somewhere along the stream.  Here, I tried to get a photo of him.  I still plan to get a better one before I move, and hopefully will, as I often see him on both our morning and evening walks.IMG_5692

The snow was coming down fairly heavy by now, sitting on the rhododendron leaves where only a few days ago they were covered with frost.IMG_5694

By the time I went out to the shops, my car was coated with a lot more snow than this…… but the streets were already melting, and I could put my snow shovel away for another time.IMG_5698

And at the end of the day – a bit of clearing. almost as good as Northern Lights.P1020654
